Tony Cloninger, with relief help from Ted Abernathy, shutout the San Francisco Giants tonight on 2 hits and the Cincinnati Reds came away with a 1-0 victory. Gaylord Perry was the hard luck loser. The only run of the game was a homerun by Red's catcher Johnny Bench in the 2nd inning. With the win and a St. Louis loss tonight, Cincinnati is now tied with the Cardinals for 1st place in the NL.

In a game for the baseball purist, Tony Cloninger(5-1) and Gaylord Perry(10-3)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Cincinnati Reds finally emerged
victorious over San Francisco Giants, 1 to 0.
Cincinnati scored the only run of the game in the top of the 2nd inning. That
early run support was enough for Cloninger and Cincinnati. Cincinnati
finished with 8 hits while San Francisco ended up with 2.
