Dick McAuliffe had 2 base hits and Denny McLain didn't allow a hit until the
6th inning at Tiger Stadium as the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 5
to 2.

McLain(9-2) was very good in the win. He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 4 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. McLain chalked up 11 strikeouts. The
right-handed McLain lost his chance for a no-hitter when Bobby Cox singled
with nobody out in the 6th inning. Detroit rapped out 7 hits for the
afternoon.

Fritz Peterson(2-1) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 7 innings and
surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks. 'He was moving it around and spotting it very
well.' Ralph Houk said. McLain pitched a great game. He deserves all the
credit.'
