Denny McLain and Luis Tiant squared off in the game today between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians. The expected close, tight ballgame only lasted 6 innings before all heck broke loose. Cleveland was leading 2-1 in the 7th when the Indians struck for 3 more runs off McLain. Detroit struck back on a 2-run homer from Willie Horton in the bottom of the 7th. With the score now 5-3 in the 9th inning, Indian catcher Joe Azcue hit a grandslam homerun off Daryl Patterson, seemingly putting the game out of reach for the Tigers. But that's when 'all heck broke loose'. Tiant went to the mound to finish the game in the bottom of the 9th with a 9-3 lead, but after giving up a walk and 2 singles, his day was over. Eddie Fisher came on in relief and was completely ineffective. He allowed Horton an RBI double, Don Wert an RBI single and then with 2 out, pinch-hitter Tommy Matchick hit a 3-run homer to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Detroit won the game in the 10th when Dick McAuliffe walked, stole 2nd, and scored on a Mickey Stanley base hit.
