Bob Gibson whiffed 10 batters at Shea Stadium where the St. Louis Cardinals
beat the New York Mets by the score of 1 to 0.

The game was won by St. Louis with a run in the top of the 9th inning. Curt
Flood reached on an error. After an out was recorded, Orlando Cepeda came up
and he laced a single. Tim McCarver was next to bat, but he was a strikeout
victim. Mike Shannon was up next and he slapped a single scoring the run.
St. Louis had just 6 hits for the night.

For Gibson(17-5) it was his 7th shutout this year. The loss was charged to
Dick Selma(6-9). He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run
in his 9 innings of work.

'Everything felt great' Gibson said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could
throw it by everybody tonight.'

1968 NL Game: Atl. @ Phil. Jarvis Wins 14th

July 28, 1968

Much of the talk about pitchers in the NL this 1968 season has centered around Bob Gibson, Fergie Jenkins, Don Drysdale, Larry Jackson and a few others. A little lost in the talk has been the performance of Atlanta's Pat Jarvis. Today, Jarvis and Braves took on Larry Jackson and the Philadelphia Phillies. The game proved to be the tight pitching contest expected with Atlanta coming out the victors 2-1. Jarvis went the distance for the Braves, gaining his 14th Win of the season and lowering his ERA to 1.41.

1968 NL Game: Cin. @ NY Jones Homers 3 Times

July 28, 1968

Cincinnati's Mack Jones smashed 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the Red's defeated the New York Mets 7-3. Jones was a one man wrecking crew as he drove in all of Cincinnati's runs off Met's pitcher Tom Seaver.  Jones joined 2 others who have hit 3 homers in a game in this 1968 NL season, Hank Aaron and most recently Ron Santo. Only Jones and Santo have had 7 RBI in a game this year.

1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #26

July 27, 1968

The Detroit Tigers played their longest game of the season tonight in Baltimore, with the contest going 15 innings before a 5-2 Tiger victory. Denny McLain was sailing along, pitching a beautiful game. with a 2-0 lead over the Baltimore Orioles until the bottom of the 8th inning. That's when McLain's propensity to give up homeruns came up to haunt him. In the bottom of the 8th Don Buford and Frank Robinson both homered to tie the game at 2-2. McLain was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the 10th inning so his night was over.
Detroit won the game in the 15th when Jim Northrup came through with a clutch RBI single. Al Kaline followed that with a 2-run homer and recently acquired Don McMahon finished the game with his 1st save as a Tiger.

Right fielder Al Kaline blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI at Memorial Stadium
where the amazing Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles in 15 innings by
the score of 5 to 2.

The score was tied at 2 after nine. Finally, Detroit prevailed in the 15th
inning. Dick Tracewski led off and started the rally when he ripped a
base-knock. Mickey Lolich followed next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.
After another out, Jim Northrup then stroked a base-hit which scored a run.
Kaline followed and he clubbed a two-run home run. Detroit out-hit Baltimore
for the game, 12 hits to 9.

John Hiller(6-2) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Don
McMahon earned the save, his 2nd. Gene Brabender(5-3) was tagged with the
loss in relief. He was not very effective, surrendering 3 runs in 2 innings.

1968 NL Game: LA @ Chi. 3 Cubs smash 2 homeruns each in rout of LA.

July 27, 1968

In a 1st for me, as far as I can recall, 3 players on the same team each hit 2 homeruns in the same game. Billy Williams, Ron Santo and Ernie Banks all hit 2 homeruns apiece while the Chicago Cubs blasted the Los Angeles Dodgers 13-0. Oh yes, Fergie Jenkins also threw a 5 hit shutout for his 15th Win of the season.

WEB GEMS- Top 4th: Jim Hickman robbed Zoilo Versalles of an extra base hit.

Fergie Jenkins tossed a complete game shutout and Ron Santo smashed 2 homeruns
and scored 3 times at Wrigley Field as the Chicago Cubs embarrassed the Los
Angeles Dodgers by the lopsided score of 13 to 0.

Santo made sure the Chicago fans enjoyed themselves. He clubbed a solo home
run in the 3rd inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 6th inning
and laced a base-knock in the 8th inning. Offensively, Chicago was a
juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.

For Jenkins(15-8) it was his 5th shutout this year. The losing pitcher was
Claude Osteen(8-12). He served up 3 gopher balls in 2 and 1/3 innings.
