1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #24

July 20, 1968

 The Detroit Tigers staged another dramatic come from behind victory today and beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 in 10 innings. Denny McLain got the start for Detroit and battled Dave McNally throughout the game. After 9 innings the score was tied 1-1. McLain had allowed only 2 hits up to that point, but 1 was a Curt Blefary homerun. In the top of the 10th inning Blefary hit another homer to give Baltimore a 2-1 lead. McLain was pinched hit for in the bottom of the 10th and looked to be headed to a Loss in this game. But the Tigers struck back. After 2 were out, Dick McAuliffe tripled and Mickey Stanley followed with a triple of his own to tie the game at 2. After an intentional walk to Al Kaline, Bill Freehan came through with a clutch game winning RBI single. The Tigers had Won and McLain was credited with his 15th Win of the season.

Denny McLain threw a 4 hitter at Tiger Stadium where the indomitable Detroit
Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles in 10 innings 3 to 2.
 
Both teams had scored 1 runs after nine full innings.  Detroit was victorious
in the 10th inning.  After two were out Dick McAuliffe started the attack as
he tripled.  Mickey Stanley stepped into the batter's box and he tripled
which scored a run.  Al Kaline then was walked intentionally.  Bill Freehan
was up next and he delivered a base-hit making Detroit the victor and
beginning a joyous home town celebration.  Detroit had only 6 hits for the
afternoon.  
 
McLain(15-3) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Dave
McNally(9-7) absorbed the loss.  He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 9 and 2/3
innings.  
 
'Everything felt great' McLain said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could
throw it by everybody today.'
