Sam McDowell blanked New York allowing just 1 hit at Yankee Stadium as the
sizzling Cleveland Indians beat the New York Yankees 2 to 0.

McDowell(13-7) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the New York offense.
He didn't give up much, just 1 hit and 6 walks in 9 innings. McDowell
recorded 18 strikeouts. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as
neither team was able to score again.

Mel Stottlemyre(6-11) was given the loss. He was a hard-luck loser, pitching
7 innings and not allowing an earned run.

McDowell didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he
had 18 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a
decent total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty
good, isn't it?'
