1968 NL Standings

May 1, 1968

The Philadelphia Phillies, to the surprise of many, have gotten off to a very good start in the 1968 NL season. They lead the league with a 13-4 record. Another surprising team has been the New York Mets. Their top rated pitching staff (33 runs allowed in 16 games) has led the team to a 10-6 start, good for 2nd place in the NL. Last year's MLB Champion St. Louis Cardinals have gotten off to a mediocre start to the season with a 9-9 record.

1968 NL News Recap with League Leaders

May 1, 1968

Here are the Standings and League Leaders in the NL as the 1968 MLB season closes out the first month of the season. The 1st place Philadelphia Phillies can attribute their fast start in the season to players such as Tony Taylor, who is leading the NL with a .360 BA. The pitching tandem of Chris Short (4-0, 2.38 ERA, 37 K's) and Larry Jackson (3-0, .93 ERA) have also contributed in a big way. Right fielder Johnny Callison is 3rd in the NL with 14 RBI. The New York Mets have a nice pitching duo of their own: Tom Seaver is 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA and Jerry Koosman is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA. Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell leads the NL with 6 HR and 15 RBI.

Denny McLain whiffed 10 batters as the Detroit Tigers defeated the New York
Yankees in 10 innings by the score of 4 to 3 at Yankee Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Detroit came out the
victor in the 10th inning. Dick McAuliffe reached on an error. McAuliffe
was running on the next pitch and he stole second. After an out was
recorded, Bill Freehan then drew a walk. Norm Cash came up and he laced a
single scoring the run. Cash took second on the throw. Detroit rapped out
11 hits for the afternoon.

McLain(3-0), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Joe
Verbanic(0-2) was the loser in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite
not allowing an earned run in his 2 innings of work.

McLain was humble when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty
confident in my pitches this afternoon. But, I had great support behind me
and I just threw what was called. That was an extremely well called game!'

In a two run game the Detroit Tigers got by the Chicago White Sox by the score
of 5 to 3.

Detroit came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
with 2 runs. Jim Northrup led off and started the rally when he reached on
an error. Ray Oyler was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Gates Brown
then was walked intentionally. Dick McAuliffe followed, but he was set down
on strikes. Bob Locker then had one get away for a wild pitch. Mickey
Stanley kept things alive and doubled bringing in two baserunners. Detroit
and Chicago each finished the afternoon with 6 hits.

The win went to Denny McLain(2-0) who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings. McLain got
relief help from Daryl Patterson who gained credit for his 2nd save.
Locker(1-1) took the loss in relief. He was the victim of a defensive lapse
and did not allow an earned run in the game.

Denny McLain whiffed 10 batters as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Cleveland
Indians by a score of 2 to 0 at Tiger Stadium.

McLain(1-0) was on top of his game. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just
5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 2.40. Neither team
managed to score after the 2nd inning.

Sam McDowell(1-1) was tagged with the loss. It was a tough loss for him as he
did not allow an earned run in his 7 innings of work.

'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I think I'm hitting a
good groove.' McLain said after the game. 'I'm ready to start another game
tomorrow!'
