1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #3

April 21, 1968

 Denny McLain got the start for Detroit in Game 2 of a doubleheader in Chicago today. McLain pitched well enough, but was lifted for a pinch hitter (Gates Brown) in the top of the 9th with the score tied 3-3. The Tigers ended up scoring 2 runs in the inning thanks to a pinch hit 2-run double by Mickey Stanley. Daryl Patterson closed out the game for a 5-3 victory allowing McLain to end up with the Win.

In a two run game the Detroit Tigers got by the Chicago White Sox by the score
of 5 to 3.
 
Detroit came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
with 2 runs.  Jim Northrup led off and started the rally when he reached on
an error.  Ray Oyler was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Gates Brown
then was walked intentionally.  Dick McAuliffe followed, but he was set down
on strikes.  Bob Locker then had one get away for a wild pitch.  Mickey
Stanley kept things alive and doubled bringing in two baserunners.  Detroit
and Chicago each finished the afternoon with 6 hits.  
 
The win went to Denny McLain(2-0) who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings. McLain got
relief help from Daryl Patterson who gained credit for his 2nd save.
Locker(1-1) took the loss in relief.  He was the victim of a defensive lapse
and did not allow an earned run in the game.
