It was Opening Day for the 1968 NL season and a full slate of games were played today.
Some of the Opening Day highlights: St. Louis pitcher Bob Gibson allowed a run in the 1st inning then shut the door on the Atlanta Braves for his 1st Win of the season as the Cardinals won 2-1. The New York Met's Tom Seaver (pictured) and San Francisco's Juan Marichal matched up in a pitcher's duel. Seaver threw a 2-hit shutout as the Mets defeated the Giants 1-0. Philadelphia's Don Money drove in 5 runs as the Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5.

Bob Gibson had a strong outing and right fielder Roger Maris left the yard and
had 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves by a score of 2
to 1.
St. Louis came up with 1 run in the bottom of the 6th inning. Both teams
finished the game with 5 hits. Gibson(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run for
the game. Pat Jarvis(0-1) absorbed the loss.

In a good matchup it was the Chicago Cubs 7, the Cincinnati Reds 5 at Crosley
Field.
Cincinnati never recovered after Chicago took the lead in the top of the 2nd
inning plating 2 runs on 2 hits. Ron Santo led off and he drew a walk.
Ernie Banks was next and he ripped a single. After an out was recorded, Jose
Arcia then doubled bringing in a run. Adolfo Phillips was up next and he
would ground out scoring the final run of the inning. Chicago and Cincinnati
each finished the afternoon with 11 hits.
The win went to Joe Niekro(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. Pete
Mikkelsen earned the save, his 1st. Milt Pappas(0-1) suffered the loss.
NEW YORK AT SAN FRANCISCO

J.C. Martin had 2 base hits and Tom Seaver threw a 2 hit shutout as the New
York Mets topped the San Francisco Giants by a score of 1 to 0 at Candlestick
Park.
Seaver(1-0) was simply too much for the San Francisco batters. He didn't give
up much, just 2 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. New York had just 5 hits for
the afternoon.
Juan Marichal(0-1) took the loss. He surrendered only 1 run and 5 hits in 8
innings. When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Marichal was
lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be
in for a long night. Seaver brought his 'A' game with him - he had good
stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two
bad pitches the entire game!
PHILADELPHIA AT LOS ANGELES

Don Money hit 2 doubles and had 5 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the
Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 9 to 5.
Money had a big day with his bat. He doubled bringing home two baserunners in
the 2nd inning, laced a base-hit which was good for two runs in the 6th
inning and doubled scoring a run in the 8th inning. Philadelphia ended up
with 13 hits for the game while Los Angeles had 10.
The win was credited to Chris Short(1-0) who went 6 innings allowing 1 run.
Claude Osteen(0-1) took the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 9 hits and
2 walks.
PITTSBURGH AT HOUSTON

Larry Dierker was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game as the Houston Astros defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by a
score of 3 to 2 at The Astrodome.
Dierker(1-0) had a solid outing for Houston. He surrendered 6 hits and 2
walks in 9 innings. Houston totaled 7 hits on the night.
Jim Bunning(0-1) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 4 walks in
5 innings.
