In a tense pitching duel between Joe Horlen and Luis Tiant, the Cleveland Indians came out on top of the Chicago White Sox 2-0. Luis Tiant was pitching a perfect game into the 9th before Chicago's Tim Cullen singled leading off the inning. Cleveland's Larry Brown hit a homerun in the 5th inning and it remained a 1-0 game into the bottom of the 8th when the Indians added an unearned run. Tiant ended up with a 1-hit complete game shutout for his 1st Win of the season.

Larry Brown connected with a 'big fly' and Luis Tiant took a no-hitter into
the 9th inning at Municipal Stadium as the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago
White Sox 2 to 0.
Tiant(1-0) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Chicago offense. He
allowed just 1 hit and no walks in 9 innings. The right-handed Tiant had his
no-hit bid broken up by Tim Cullen who singled with nobody out in the 9th
inning. Cleveland banged out 8 hits on the afternoon.
The loss was charged to Joe Horlen(0-1). He allowed 2 runs and 8 hits in 7
and 2/3 innings. 'He had his 'A' game today,' Al Dark said of Tiant. 'Very
impressive performance.'
