1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #1

 March 11, 2018

During the course of posting info about this 1968 replay, I'm also going to post every game started by Detroit's Denny McLain over the entire season.  McLain had 41 starts and won 31 games in in 1968, the last pitcher to reach the 30 Win mark. I'll also add his IRL (in real life) stats after each game to compare his progress in the quest for 30 Wins.

April 11, 1968

After losing their home opener yesterday, the Detroit Tigers sent Denny McLain to the mound to battle the Boston Red Sox in a night game at Tiger Stadium. Detroit got off to a quick 4-0 start when Norm Cash hit a Grand Slam homer in the bottom of the 1st. The Tigers added a run in the 2nd to make it 5-0, but McLain allowed 3 homeruns and 6 runs (4 earned) until he was pulled in the 7th inning. The 2 teams battled back and forth after that until Bill Freehan hit a walk-off solo homerun in the bottom of the 9th to win the game for Detroit 9-8.

Replay: McLain gets no decision in 1st start: 6 IP, 4 ER. Detroit wins 9-8  Season totals: 0-0, 6.00
IRL:      McLain gets no decision in 1st start: 7 IP, 3 ER. Detroit wins 4-3  Season totals: 0-0, 3.86
