1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #5

May 1, 1968

 The Minnesota Twins came into Detroit tied for 1st place in the AL with the Tigers. Denny McLain was getting his 5th start of the season for Detroit and Minnesota made sure it was his shortest appearance of the season. The Twins chased McLain in the 4th inning when they scored 4 runs on 5 hits for a  6-1 lead. The Tigers never recovered and Minnesota won the game 10-4. Jim Merritt got his MLB leading 5th Win and Tony Oliva increased his AL leading BA to .452 by banging out 4 hits in 5 AB for the Twins.

Tony Oliva had 4 hits as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Detroit Tigers by
the score of 10 to 4 at Tiger Stadium.
 
Minnesota scored 5 runs in the decisive 4th inning when they came up with 4
base hits.  The highlight belonged to John Roseboro who deflated the spirits
of the home town crowd when he popped a two-run clout over the fence.
Minnesota totaled 11 hits on the night.  
 
The victory went to Jim Merritt(5-0) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 4
runs. The losing pitcher was Denny McLain(3-1).  He was knocked around,
surrendering 6 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.
