1968 All Star Game

July 9, 1968

The best players in MLB played tonight in the All Star Game in the Houston Astrodome. The NL went up 3-0 in the 3rd inning on a Willie McCovey homerun. But the AL battled back, getting 1 run in the 4th and 5 in the 6th to take a 6-3 lead. The big blow for the AL was Boog Powell's 3 run shot off Don Drysdale. The NL added a run in the 6th inning but that would be all the scoring for the night and the AL walked off the field with a 6-4 victory.

1968 AL Standings and Team Grand Totals at the All Star Break

July 8, 1968

The Detroit Tigers enter the All Star break with a commanding 12.5 game lead over the 2nd place Baltimore Orioles. Nobody has been able to slow down Detroit's march to the Pennant. The rest of the league is hoping this break in the regular season may do what they can't: cool off the Tigers.

1968 AL News Recap and League Leaders at the All Star Break

July 8, 1968

Detroit Tiger Willie Horton is making a big run for AL MVP with his 1st half batting #'s. He's 3rd in BA and 1st in HR and RBI. Minnesota's Tony Oliva leads the AL with a .328 BA. Horton's teammate Mickey Lolich (15-1, 2.05) is making a run for the Cy Young Award but Baltimore's Jim Hardin (15-2, 1.92) may have something to say about that.

1968 NL Standings and Team Grand Totals at the All Star Break

July 8, 1968

As MLB breaks for the All Star Game in the Houston Astrodome tomorrow, the St. Louis Cardinals find themselves clinging to an uncomfortable spot at the top of the NL standings. Uncomfortable because the Cincinnati Reds and the Philadelphia Phillies are right on their heels. The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants are also pressing the League leaders.
