1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #21

July 7, 1968

Denny McLain had a poor start today in Detroit's 1st game of a doubleheader against the visiting Oakland A's. McLain lasted 7 innings in the game and left with the Tigers trailing 5-1. He did strikeout 9, but the 5 earned runs allowed pushed his ERA up over 3.00. Once again however, his team got him off the hook for a loss by coming back and tying the game 5-5, sending it into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Dick McAuliffe led off by hitting his 12th homerun of the season and giving Detroit another come from behind victory. John Hiller and Daryl Patterson pitched well in relief for the Tigers with Patterson picking up the Win.
