1968 NL Game: St. Louis @ LA

July 1, 1968

In a game harkening back to yesteryear, Bob Gibson of the Cardinals and Don Drysdale of the Dodgers battled to the end in an 11 inning game that resulted in a 1-0 victory for St. Louis. Gibson got the Win, his NL leading 14th of the season, his 4th shutout, and lowered his ERA to 1.36. Drysdale got the hard luck loss, allowing only 4 hits in the game, but 1 of those hits was a homerun by Julian Javier in the top of the 11th that held up for the deciding score.

Bob Gibson pitched 11 strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the
Los Angeles Dodgers in 11 innings by the score of 1 to 0 at Dodger
Stadium.

No runners had crossed home plate after the regulation nine. Finally, St.
Louis pulled the game out in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded,
Julian Javier ripped a solo home run. St. Louis managed only 4 hits on the
night.

For Gibson(14-3) it was his 4th shutout this year. Don Drysdale(9-7) was
charged with the loss. He surrendered just 4 hits and 2 walks in 11 innings.

Red Schoendienst was very impressed with his pitcher, Gibson, 'He had
unusually good pitch placement tonight. It was almost unfair - but a
beautiful game to watch from where I sat'
