1968 NL Standings

September 1, 1968

We've reached the last full month of play in the 1968 NL regular season. The Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals continue see-sawing in the top spot in the NL. It looks like it'll be a battle between the 2 teams until the end of the month. St. Louis is ahead 8-7 in the season series between the teams, and will meet the Reds for the last 3 game set 2 days from now. Cincinnati had an outstanding month of August going 20-12, best in the NL. The Cardinals meanwhile were 13-18, worst in the league.

John Hiller delivered 9 solid innings at Tiger Stadium where the powerful
Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 3 to 1.

Detroit did all of it's offensive work in the 1st inning with 3 runs on 2
hits. Dick McAuliffe opened up the inning nicely when he hit a single.
Mickey Stanley followed and he reached on an error. Al Kaline then drew a
walk to load the bases. Willie Horton came up and he would ground out
bringing in a run. Bill Freehan came up to bat and stroked a one-base hit as
another two runners scored. That was all the offense they were to need.
After the 2nd inning, neither team was able to score.

Hiller(10-3) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. The loss was
charged to Dave McNally(14-12). He surrendered just 4 hits and 1 walk in 7
innings.

1968 NL Game: Hou. @ Chi. Jenkins Wins 20th

August 30, 1968

Chicago's Ferguson Jenkins became the NL's 1st 20 game winner this season in today's game against the Houston Astros at Wrigley Field. It didn't look like Fergie would get a Win when he walked off the mound after pitching the 9th inning with his team trailing 3-1. But the Cubs came back in the bottom of the 9th by scoring 3 runs and winning the game 4-3. The big blow was a 2-run triple hit by Don Kessinger. For Jenkins, it was his 25th complete game in 33 starts. He also struck out 7, giving him a league leading 220 in that category.

Fergie Jenkins allowed Leo Durocher to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game as the Chicago Cubs won in dramatic fashion over the Houston Astros by a
score of 4 to 3 at Wrigley Field.

Chicago had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning plating 3 runs
using 3 hits. Willie Smith led off and started the rally when he drew a
walk. Randy Hundley was next and he lined a base-hit. Adolfo Phillips then
ripped a base-knock knocking in a run. After an out was recorded, Don
Kessinger came up and he tripled resulting in an exciting win for Chicago and
a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Chicago banged out 10
hits on the afternoon.

The victory was credited to Jenkins(20-11) who went the distance, allowing 3
runs. Larry Dierker(6-18) was given the loss. He pitched 8 innings and
surrendered 9 hits and 2 walks.

Jenkins and Smith were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great
come from behind victory. As Leo Durocher noted, 'A win like this one can do
wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the
players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'

Left fielder Willie Horton smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Denny McLain
pitched 9 strong innings as the sizzling Detroit Tigers ballclub embarrassed
the New York Yankees by the count of 12 to 1.

Horton was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day
at their team's expense. He lifted one out of the park for a two run home
run in the 6th inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 8th inning and hit a
single in the 9th inning. The Detroit offense was great, scoring in 7 of the
9 innings.

The victory was credited to McLain(21-5) who went the distance, allowing 1
run. Mel Stottlemyre(8-14) was given the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls
in 6 innings.

'He was moving it around and spotting it very well.' Ralph Houk said. McLain
pitched a great game. He deserves all the credit.'

It was Horton's 39th homerun of the season, tying him with Frank Howard and Ken Harrelson for the AL lead.
