August 24, 1968

It was a game of rarities at the plate today as Denny McLain pitched and hit his way to victory while the Detroit Tigers pounded the New York Yankees 12-1. Mickey Stanley got the Tigers on the board in the 1st inning when he hit an inside the park homerun. In the 4th inning Tommy Matchick hit a 3 run homer, just his 2nd homerun of the year. Denny McLain helped his own cause when he hit 2 triples, driving in 2 runs. Willie Horton smacked 2 homeruns, #'s 41 and 42, giving him the AL lead in that category. Norm Cash added to the attack in the 9th inning when he homered and drove in 3 runs. McLain went the distance for Detroit, allowing 5 hits and striking out 8. It was his 21st Win of the season.

Left fielder Willie Horton smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Denny McLain
pitched 9 strong innings as the sizzling Detroit Tigers ballclub embarrassed
the New York Yankees by the count of 12 to 1.

Horton was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day
at their team's expense. He lifted one out of the park for a two run home
run in the 6th inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 8th inning and hit a
single in the 9th inning. The Detroit offense was great, scoring in 7 of the
9 innings.

The victory was credited to McLain(21-5) who went the distance, allowing 1
run. Mel Stottlemyre(8-14) was given the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls
in 6 innings.

'He was moving it around and spotting it very well.' Ralph Houk said. McLain
pitched a great game. He deserves all the credit.'
