1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #31

August 16, 1968

 So after posting that McLain needed to win all his remaining starts to reach 30 Wins on the season, Denny and the Tigers went out today and lost to the Boston Red Sox 4-2. McLain had a 2-0 lead going into the 6th inning but the Red Sox scored 4 runs, keyed by a Reggie Smith 3-run homer. Jim Lonborg shut down the Tigers after the 2nd inning and went the distance for the Win. McLain's quest for 30 Wins is now over.

Reggie Smith jacked one out of the ballyard and had 3 RBI and Jim Lonborg had
a complete game as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers by the
score of 4 to 2 at Fenway Park.
 
Boston did all the necessary damage in the 6th inning scoring 4 runners on 4
hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Smith who thrilled the crowd when
he belted a three-run homer.  Boston totaled 8 hits on the afternoon.  
 
The winning pitcher was Lonborg(5-3) who allowed 2 runs for the game. Denny
McLain(19-5) was the losing pitcher.  He gave up 4 runs and 8 hits in 8
innings.
