1968 NL Standings

August 29, 1968

 The St. Louis Cardinals regained 1st place in the NL tonight with a shutout win against the Pittsburgh Pirates while the Cincinnati Reds lost to the NY Mets. Cincinnati had wrestled the top spot away from St. Louis on August 10th but could never put any distance between themselves and the Cardinals.

30,633 fans were treated to a fine game at Shea Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The New York Mets won by the
slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.
 
The game was decided in the 8th inning.  After two outs Cleon Jones doubled.
Bud Harrelson stepped into the batter's box and he hit a single scoring the
run.  Cincinnati had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
 
The victory went to Al Jackson(2-9) who went 3 and 1/3 innings, allowing no
runs. Bob Lee(3-2) was the loser in relief.  He allowed 2 runs and 4 hits in
1 and 2/3 innings.

Curt Flood had 3 base hits and Ray Washburn had a strong outing as the St.
Louis Cardinals bested the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 0 at Forbes
Field.
 
Washburn(14-9) was on top of his game.  He allowed only 4 hits and no walks in
9 innings.  St. Louis managed 9 hits in their victory.  
 
Bob Moose(9-4) was tagged with the loss.  He gave up 6 hits and 2 walks in 6
innings.
