1968 NL Game Stories

August 5, 1968

 The pitchers were dealing in today's slate of games in the NL. 4 of the 5 games ended in shutout victory's for the winning pitchers. The other game ended with a 2-1 score that saw Juan Marichal carry a no-hitter into the 6th inning before coming away with his 15th Win of the season.

Joe Torre went deep and had 3 RBI and Milt Pappas came through with a solid 9
innings as the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs by a score of 9 to
0.
 
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Torre.  He ripped a one-base hit plating a run in the 1st inning,
cracked a solo homerun in the 7th inning and doubled knocking in a run in the
8th inning.  Atlanta totaled 16 hits on the night.  
 
For Pappas(7-10) it was his 3rd shutout this year. The loss was charged to
Gary Ross(0-3).  He surrendered 4 runs and 7 hits in 5 innings.
 
NEW YORK AT HOUSTON

Jerry Koosman carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and Tommie Agee had 2
base hits as the New York Mets defeated the Houston Astros by a score of 1 to
0 at The Astrodome.
 
Koosman(11-11) escaped virtually unscathed against the Houston hitters.  He
was stingy on the mound, allowing just 4 hits and no walks in 9 innings.  The
left-handed Koosman lost his chance for a no-hitter when Julio Gotay singled
with two outs in the 6th inning.  Houston threatened in the 9th but their
rally came up short.  
 
Denny Lemaster(9-10) was charged with the loss. 'Koosman took our guys to
school' Harry Walker said. 'Too bad he doesn't pitch for us - it would make
my job a whole lot easier!'
 
PHILADELPHIA AT SAN FRANCISCO

Juan Marichal took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Candlestick Park where
the San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 2 to
1.
 
Marichal(15-9) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for
the Philadelphia batters.  He gave up just 4 hits and no walks in 9 innings.
The right-handed Marichal lost his chance for a no-hitter when Woodie Fryman
singled with two outs in the 6th inning.  Philadelphia was set down quietly
in the 9th.  
 
Fryman(10-12) was tagged with the loss.  He was stingy with the baserunners,
allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.
 
Marichal was obviously very pleased with his performance in the aftermath of
the game, 'It was just one of those games where everything worked.  My arm
felt great, heck, I could have pitched another two or three innings.  I only
hope that I can do it again next time out!'
 
PITTSBURGH AT LOS ANGELES

Steve Blass went 9 strong innings and Roberto Clemente had 2 base hits at
Dodger Stadium as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2 to
0.
 
Blass(9-7) was virtually untouchable.  He allowed only 4 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings.  After the 3rd inning, neither team was able to score.  
 
Jack Billingham(4-6) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 2 runs and 4 hits in 8
innings.
 
CINCINNATI AT ST. LOUIS

Third baseman Tony Perez had 2 base hits and Gerry Arrigo dominated striking
out 10 St. Louis batters at Busch Stadium where the Cincinnati Reds beat the
St. Louis Cardinals 4 to 0.
 
Arrigo(8-7) was in control of the game from the outset.  He surrendered only 8
hits and no walks in 9 innings dropping his ERA from 3.69 to 3.45.
Cincinnati finished with 13 hits in the victory.  
 
Nelson Briles(7-11) was charged with the loss.  'I had my good stuff tonight.'
Arrigo said. 'As the game went along I started to get the feeling that I was
going to strike out a bunch of hitters.'
