1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #28

August 4, 1968

Denny McLain got off to a horrible start in today's game against the Minnesota Twins, but thanks to a stellar defense and more late inning heroics by the Detroit batters, McLain Won his 17th game with a 5-4 Tiger victory.
McLain gave up 3 straight hits to start the game giving the Twins a 1-0 lead and runners on 2nd and 3rd. The next batter, Bob Allison, hit a hard line drive to Don Wert at 3rd base who caught the ball, stepped on 3rd and fired the ball to Dick McAuliffe at 2nd base to complete a TRIPLY PLAY! It was the 1st Triple Play turned in this 1968 MLB season.
McLain and the Tigers trailed Minnesota 3-2 until the 8th inning when Bill Freehan hit a 3-run homer giving Detroit a 5-3 lead. McLain was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the 9th inning and Don McMahon came in to close out the game.
