1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #35, Tigers Clinch the Pennant!

September 1, 1968

 The Detroit Tigers clinched the AL Pennant today by defeating the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 in front of their hometown fans at Tiger Stadium. Denny McLain got the Win for Detroit, his 23rd of the season. McLain was in control from the beginning of the game. The only blemish on his start was a solo homerun hit by pinch hitter Elrod Hendricks in the 8th inning. Detroit will now be able relax and rest players for the whole month of September in preparation for the World Series.

Denny McLain went 9 strong innings as the very potent Detroit Tigers topped
the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 5 to 1 at Tiger Stadium.
 
McLain(23-5) looked very much in control throughout the day.  He was stingy on
the mound, allowing just 5 hits and no walks in 9 innings.  Detroit banged
out 11 hits on the afternoon.  
 
Jim Hardin(18-10) was hit with the loss.  He got hammered, allowing 11 hits
and 3 walks in 7 innings.  'All of my pitches were working today,' McLain
said.  'I felt really good out there, and heck, I think I could have gone
longer.'
