1968 NL Game: St. Louis @ Cin.

September 2, 1968

 The top 2 teams in the NL met tonight in game 1 of an important 3 game Series. The St. Louis Cardinals came into Cincinnati trailing the 1st place Reds by 1 game. Cardinals had their ace Bob Gibson going for them and Cincinnati was countering with their ace Gary Nolan.
It was Nolan who came out on top in this matchup by pitching a brilliant 2 hit shutout as the Reds defeated the Cardinals 5-0. Gibson had his shortest stint of the season, getting chased in the 6th inning and taking the loss. Cincinnati now leads St. Louis by 2 games.

Pete Rose had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Gary Nolan threw a 2 hit shutout as
the Cincinnati Reds topped the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5 to 0 at
Crosley Field.
 
Nolan(10-3) was tremendous on the mound for Cincinnati.  He surrendered only 2
hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.  Cincinnati banged out 8 hits on the night.
 
Bob Gibson(19-8) was hit with the loss.  'He had his 'A' game tonight,' Dave
Bristol said of Nolan.  'Very impressive performance.'
