Chicago's Ferguson Jenkins became the NL's 1st 20 game winner this season in today's game against the Houston Astros at Wrigley Field. It didn't look like Fergie would get a Win when he walked off the mound after pitching the 9th inning with his team trailing 3-1. But the Cubs came back in the bottom of the 9th by scoring 3 runs and winning the game 4-3. The big blow was a 2-run triple hit by Don Kessinger. For Jenkins, it was his 25th complete game in 33 starts. He also struck out 7, giving him a league leading 220 in that category.

Fergie Jenkins allowed Leo Durocher to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game as the Chicago Cubs won in dramatic fashion over the Houston Astros by a
score of 4 to 3 at Wrigley Field.
Chicago had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning plating 3 runs
using 3 hits. Willie Smith led off and started the rally when he drew a
walk. Randy Hundley was next and he lined a base-hit. Adolfo Phillips then
ripped a base-knock knocking in a run. After an out was recorded, Don
Kessinger came up and he tripled resulting in an exciting win for Chicago and
a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Chicago banged out 10
hits on the afternoon.
The victory was credited to Jenkins(20-11) who went the distance, allowing 3
runs. Larry Dierker(6-18) was given the loss. He pitched 8 innings and
surrendered 9 hits and 2 walks.
Jenkins and Smith were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great
come from behind victory. As Leo Durocher noted, 'A win like this one can do
wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the
players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
