1968 AL Game: Min. @ Chi. Perfect Game!

June 1, 1968

Minnesota's Dean Chance threw a perfect game today as the Twins downed the Chicago White Sox 1-0. In a great pitching duel with Cisco Carlos, Chance was untouchable on the mound and Minnesota was able to scratch out a run in the top of the 9th. Chance struck out 11 in the game.

1968 AL Standings

June 1, 1968

The calendar turns to the month of June in the 1968 AL season. My Detroit Tigers have been playing outstanding baseball and hold a 4.5 game lead over 2nd place Baltimore. The Tigers have scored more runs, by a large margin, than any other team in the league. They lead the league with a team .261 BA and only the Chicago White Sox have better team pitching stats. The Orioles and Minnesota Twins are having outstanding seasons in their own right, while the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox are 2nd and 3rd in the league in run differential.

June 1, 1968

The 1968 NL season has reached the month of June. The St. Louis Cardinals have finally caught up to the 1st place Philadelphia Phillies. The Cardinals did it by going a league best 21-6 in May. Philadelphia isn't letting the top spot go easily though, the Phillies were 15-9 in May. There's 6 other ballclubs near .500 or better and are still very much in the mix at this early stage of the season.

1968 NL News Recap and League Leaders

June 1, 1968

Standings and League Leaders in the NL thru the month of May in the 1968 season. San Francisco's Willie McCovey has been putting up some strong productive #'s, but pitching has been the big story so far this season. St. Louis hurler Bob Gibson has been on a roll and now leads the NL in Wins. He's won his last 8 starts and is now 9-1 on the year. His 1.51 ERA is 3rd in the league and he's tied for the top spot in K's with 81. New York's Tom Seaver and Los Angeles' Don Drydale have been putting up excellent stats in every category except Wins/Losses. Due to their clubs' lack of hitting, Seaver is 6-3 on the year and Drydale is 6-4. Chicago's Fergie Jenkins, Philadelphia's Larry Jackson, SF's Gaylord Perry, and Gibson's teammate Steve Carlton are all having impressive starts to the 1968 campaign.

Luis Tiant(6-2) was on top of his game in California as he tossed a beauty of
a no-hitter against the California Angels. The Cleveland Indians won by a
score of 6 to 0.

Tiant had an afternoon to remember. He walked 3 California batters. The
Cleveland players and coaches started to leave Tiant alone with his thoughts
after the game reached the 7th inning. By the time the 9th inning rolled
around, you could hear a pin drop every time he went to his wind-up - and an
explosion after every out. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 4th
inning with no runs scored after that point.

Marty Pattin(1-1) ended up with the loss. 'Tiant was simply incredible'
losing pitcher Pattin said. 'I hate to admit this but I'd pay to watch a man
pitch like that'

1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #10

May 25, 1968

Denny McLain pitched another gem tonight as he out-dueled Lew Krausse of the Oakland A's. McLain scattered 8 hits and struck out 8 while shutting out the A's in Detroit's 1-0 victory. Norm Cash hit a homerun in the 7th inning and that would be all the scoring in the game. McLain threw his 2nd shutout in a row and extended his scoreless inning streak to 20.

1968 NL Game: LA @ Hous.

May 24, 1968

The longest game of the 1968 NL season was played tonight in Houston and the LA Dodgers ended up defeating the Astros in 16 innings 1-0. Denny Lemaster started for Houston and pitched 11 scoreless innings. Don Sutton threw 8 scoreless innings for LA. Both teams have had trouble scoring runs this season and tonight's game was a great example of the ballclubs' inabilities at the plate. On the other hand, for those fans that love low scoring pitching duels, this game couldn't get any better. LA did have 11 hits during the game, but Houston could mange only 6.

1968 Player Highlight

May 20, 1968

Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Don Drysdale followed up his last 10 inning shutout Win with a 9 inning shutout Win. He's pitched outstanding so far this year, much better than his 5-3 record indicates. His ERA stands at .99, lowest in MLB this 1968 season. He's thrown 4 shutouts in his 9 starts and has never allowed more than 2 runs in a game. Drysdale should be at least 8-0 but his run support ranks among the NL's lowest.

1968 AL Standings

May 15, 1968

We're halfway through the month of May and my Detroit Tigers sit in 1st place in the AL. The team's hitting has been, overall, tops in the league. Their 176 RS far outdistance 2nd slotted Minnesota's 144.  The pitching is in the upper 1/3 in the league. Many teams are pushing the Tigers, but one that is not is the Washington Senators. They sit at the bottom of the league with a 8-22 record and have lost 13 in a row.
