The St. Louis Cardinals won the deciding game of a 3 game series against the league leading Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 today. The Cardinals broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 9th inning and then held on for the win. Steve Carlton went the distance for the Cardinals, picking up his 6th Win of the season. St. Louis is now within a .5 game of Philadelphia.

Steve Carlton completed the game without help from the bullpen at Shibe Park

and he doubled scoring the run. St. Louis had 8 hits for the afternoon.
