1968 NL Game Story: St. Louis @ Phil.

May 19, 1968

  The St. Louis Cardinals won the deciding game of a 3 game series against the league leading Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 today. The Cardinals broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 9th inning and then held on for the win. Steve Carlton went the distance for the Cardinals, picking up his 6th Win of the season. St. Louis is now within a .5 game of Philadelphia.

Steve Carlton completed the game without help from the bullpen at Shibe Park
where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of
4 to 3.
 
The game was won by St. Louis with a run in the top of the 9th inning.
Orlando Cepeda ripped a single.  Mike Shannon stepped into the batter's box
and he doubled scoring the run.  St. Louis had 8 hits for the afternoon.
 
Carlton(6-2) allowed 3 runs on the game. Chris Short(6-2) was the loser. He
pitched 8 innings giving up 8 hits and 3 walks.
