Denny McLain got win #5 this season, but it wasn't easy. Every time the Tigers staked Denny to a lead, Frank Howard would come up to bat and homer off him. Howard hit 3 HR's in the game, and when he came to the plate in the 8th with a man on base, Mayo Smith (me) decided he'd seen enough of that matchup and gave McLain the hook. Fred Lasher came on to retire Howard and John Hiller pitched the 9th inning, getting the save with Detroit's 5-4 victory over the Washington Senators.
