1968 World Series: Final Stats

October 8, 1968

The Detroit Tigers won the 1968 World Series 4 games to 1. Detroit can credit their pitching staff's ability to shut down the St. Louis offense as the key to defeating the Cardinals. Detroit also had timely hitting and played good defense, committing only 1 error. St. Louis, conversely,  can blame their lack of hitting, sloppy defense, and mediocre pitching (with the exception of Bob Gibson) on their defeat.

1968 World Series Game 5: Detroit Wins!

October 7, 1968

The Detroit Tigers are the 1968 World Series Champions! Mickey Lolich was virtually untouchable throwing a complete game shutout in the Tigers 7-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Lolich (pictured) allowed only 4 hits, walked 1 and struck out 6, getting his 2nd Win of The Series. The Tigers scored 4 runs in the 4th inning and that would prove to be all Detroit would need in this game to back Lolich's gem. Catcher Bill Freehan (pictured) hit a bases loaded single and Cardinal left fielder Lou Brock threw the ball away for a 2-base error, allowing all 3 base runners to score and Freehan to go to 3rd. With Don Wert up next, Freehan came home on Ray Washburn's wild pitch to complete the scoring.  The Tigers added 3 runs in the 8th, when Freehan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly by Wert and a run scoring double by Lolich.
The Detroit Tigers win the series 4 games to 1 and are crowned 1968 World Series Champions!

1968 World Series Game 4

October 6, 1968

It was the St. Louis Cardinals that got off to a quick start today in Game 4 of the 1968 World Series at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. With 2 outs in the top of the 1st inning Roger Maris doubled and Orlando Cepeda drove him home with a double of his own to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Similar to Game 1, Detroit starter Denny McLain and St. Louis starter Bob Gibson settled in after that initial scoring and gave fans a clinic on brilliant pitching. The score was still 1-0 until the bottom of the 8th when Tiger 1st baseman Norm Cash (pictured) blasted a homerun into the upper deck in rightfield.
The 2 teams went down in order in the 9th, and the game went to extra innings tied 1-1 without either starter still pitching. McLain was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the 7th and Gibson in the top of the 10th. In the top of the 10th, Julian Javier led off with a double but was left stranded. Dick McAuliffe led off the bottom of the 10th with a base hit off reliever Joe Hoerner. Mickey Stanley then laid down a bunt that catcher Tim McCarver fielded and threw over the head of the 1st baseman Cepeda for a 2 base error. With runners at 2nd and 3rd, Al Kaline struck out but Norm Cash followed with a single through a drawn in infield, scoring McAuliffe and giving Detroit a 2-1 victory.
The Tigers now hold a 3-1 lead in The Series. Mickey Lolich will try to clinch the World Series Championship tomorrow for Detroit, Ray Washburn will start for the Cardinals.

1968 World Series Game 3

October 5, 1968

The 1968 World Series shifted to Detroit for Game 3 and it was played in poor conditions at Tiger Stadium. On a cool, dark, wet afternoon, the Tigers scored just enough and held on to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2. Earl Wilson pitched a great game and Al Kaline drove in 2 runs with a 5th inning double to lead the Tigers to victory. Detroit had 2 runners thrown out at the plate in that 5th inning which led to Cardinal manager Red Schoendienst sending Bobby Tolan in to pinch hit for starter Steve Carlton in the top of the 6th. Wilson allowed only 2 hits until the 9th inning, one of them a homer hit by Roger Maris, but he got into trouble in the 9th. After a double by Brock and single by Flood that scored Brock, Mayo Smith brought in lefty John Hiller to face Maris. Schoendienst stuck with the lefty hitting Maris, probably because of his earlier homerun, and Hiller struck him out. The next batter Orlando Cepeda popped out and Hiller struck out pinch hitter Ron Davis to end the game. Detroit now leads The Series 2 games to 1. Tomorrow's Game 4 will feature a rematch between Game 1 pitchers Denny McLain and Bob Gibson.
