1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #39

September 19, 1968

Denny McLain pitched his 5th shutout of the season and the Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees 5-0 today at Tiger Stadium. Norm Cash hit 2 homeruns and drove in all 5 runs for Detroit. Cash is the other hitter, besides Willie Horton, that has been very over-performing for me during this 1968 replay. Also of note: Mayo Smith announced that CF Mickey Stanley (pictured) would be moved to shortstop for the World Series in order for Horton, Northrup and Kaline to play in the outfield. Today Stanley started at SS, went 1 for 4 at the plate, and committed an error in the field on the 1st ball hit to him by Horace Clarke leading off the game. Stanley then settled down and handled 4 other balls hit to him, turning 2 doubleplays. This was also the game 'in real life' that McLain served up a homerun to Mickey Mantle who was making his last appearance at Tiger Stadium before retiring from MLB.

Replay: McLain gets the Win in his 39th start: 9 IP, 0 ER  Detroit wins 5-0 Season totals: 25-6, 2.58
IRL:      McLain gets the Win in his 39th start: 9 IP, 2 ER  Detroit wins 6-2 Season totals: 31-5, 2.01

Denny McLain held New York scoreless on just 3 hits and first baseman Norm
Cash launched 2 homeruns as the indomitable Detroit Tigers outscored the New
York Yankees 5 to 0.

It was a good day for Detroit thanks to Cash. He launched a Grand Slam
homerun in the 1st inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 3rd
inning. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 3rd inning with no runs
scored after that point.

It was the 5th shutout of the year for McLain(25-6). The loss was charged to
Mel Stottlemyre(9-17). He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 9 hits and 3
walks.
