1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #40

September 23, 1968

  The Detroit Tigers won their 117th game tonight, a MLB record for a 162 game season, defeating the Baltimore Orioles 8-4. Denny McLain went the distance for his 26th victory. Al Kaline had a good day at the plate, and Mickey Stanley got more work at SS in preparation for World Series play.

Denny McLain mowed down 10 Baltimore batters and Al Kaline smacked 2 homeruns
and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers bested the Baltimore Orioles 8 to 4 at
Memorial Stadium.
 
Kaline had a good evening at the plate.  He hit a bases-empty home run in the
1st inning, doubled which plated a run in the 7th inning and smashed a
solo-shot out of the park in the 9th inning.  Detroit totaled 14 hits on the
night.  
 
McLain(26-6) got the victory, allowing 4 runs for the game. Roger Nelson(4-4)
was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 6 innings allowing 9 hits and 1
walk.
 
McLain was pleased with his performance.  He noted, 'I had good command of all
my pitches.  Just as important, my location was right on.'
