1968 Detroit Game: Denny McLain Start #37

September 10, 1968

  The California Angels put and end to Detroit's 10 game winning streak, defeating the Tigers 5-4 in extra innings. Denny McLain went 8 innings for Detroit before being lifted for a pinch hitter. California won the game in the 10th inning when Jim Fregosi executed the squeeze play to perfection.

Shortstop Jim Fregosi went yard and had 3 RBI as the California Angels
defeated the Detroit Tigers in 10 innings by a score of 5 to 4 at Anaheim
Stadium.
 
Both teams had scored 4 runs after nine full innings.  California was
victorious in the 10th inning.  Chuck Cottier drew a walk.  Vic Davalillo
stepped up to the plate and he laced a single.  Davalillo took second on the
throw.  Fregosi then worked the squeeze play to perfection resulting in an
exciting win for California and a raucous post-game celebration by the home
town fans.  California had 10 hits for the night.  
 
The win went to Tom Burgmeier(3-2) who allowed no runs in 3 innings. Jon
Warden(5-1) was given the loss in relief.  He pitched 1 inning allowing 1 hit
and 2 walks.
