October 2, 1968The 1968 World Series got underway today in St. Louis with the NL Champion Cardinals taking on the AL Champion Detroit Tigers. In a close exciting game it was, probably, the most unlikeliest player that emerged as the hero. The game featured the top 2 pitchers in MLB this season starting for their teams; Denny McLain of the Tigers and Bob Gibson of the Cardinals. The game started off with a bang when Dick McAuliffe led off for Detroit by hitting a homerun deep into the rightfield seats. Gibson settled down immediately after that and battled with McLain until the bottom of the 8th inning, the score still 1-0 in favor of Detroit. The Cardinals finally got to McLain in the bottom of the 8th when Curt Flood came through with a clutch 2-run single, giving St. Louis a 2-1 lead. Detroit wasn't done though. In the top of the 9th, Willie Horton homered to left off Gibson tying the game at 2 and that would be all the scoring in regulation. The game went to extra innings. In the bottom of the 12th, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, Cardinal SS Dal Maxvill (pictured) got his 4th hit of the game, a game winning RBI single. Maxvill was the hero of the game and the St. Louis fans celebrated with glee!

Dal Maxvill had 4 hits as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Detroit Tigers in
12 innings by a score of 3 to 2 at Busch Stadium.
The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Finally, St. Louis pulled the
game out in the 12th inning. Tim McCarver drew a walk. Mike Shannon was
next and he was hit by a pitch. Julian Javier then laid down a sacrifice
bunt. Maxvill was up next and he singled resulting in an exciting win for
St. Louis and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. St.
Louis had 11 hits for the afternoon.
The win went to Joe Hoerner(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Jon
Warden(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed no hits and 1 walk
without retiring a batter.
