September 12, 1968

A number of great pitching performances were on display in games played yesterday in the NL. First up is Cincinnati's Gary Nolan's 2-hit shutout victory over the Houston Astros. The Reds won that game 2-0 but dropped the 2nd game of the doubleheader 13-5.  Meanwhile, St. Louis' Bob Gibson lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Mike Kekich and the LA Dodgers. These 3 games resulted in Cincinnati taking a 1/2 game lead in the NL.
In Chicago, Fergie Jenkins won his 22nd game of the season with the Cubs 2-1 victory over the NY Mets. Pittsburgh's Doc Ellis and Steve Blass both got Wins in the Pirates doubleheader sweep against the Philadelphia Phillies. Ellis was the victor in game 1, by a 2-1 score. Blass was the winner in the nightcap 5-1. In Atlanta, Pat Jarvis (18-7, 1.46) was taking on Juan Marichal (19-13, 2.12) and the San Francisco Giants. Both pitchers threw great games but weren't around at the end of Atlanta's 3-2 10 inning victory.
