1968 NL Game Stories

September 6, 1968

 In today's slate of NL games: Atlanta's Pat Jarvis picked up his 18th Win the season by shutting out the Houston Astro's 8-0. Jarvis also lowered his NL leading ERA to 1.45
The Cincinnati Reds split a doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers leaving the Reds still tied for 1st place with the St. Louis Cardinals.
 The St. Louis Cardinals split their doubleheader with San Francisco. Bob Gibson got his 20th Win of the season in Game 1 when the Cardinals defeated the Giants  5-2. In Game 2, Juan Marichal got his 19th Win with the Giants 4-2 victory.

Pat Jarvis threw a 3 hit shutout as the Atlanta Braves outscored the Houston
Astros 8 to 0.
 
Jarvis(18-7) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Houston batters.  He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings.
Atlanta totaled 14 hits on the night.  
 
Don Wilson(11-14) was charged with the loss.  He pitched 7 innings and
surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks. Atlanta now has a record of 73-69.  Still in
a bad slump, with this loss, Houston is 2-8 lately and 51-91, worst in the
league on the year.
 
LOS ANGELES AT CINCINNATI

Gerry Arrigo had a complete game and Tony Perez had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at
Crosley Field where the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the
score of 8 to 2.
 
Cincinnati set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring 3 runs
utilizing 4 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Vada Pinson started the
attack as he stroked a single.  Mack Jones next to the plate and he smacked a
single.  Perez then tripled which was good for two runs.  After another out,
Lee May came to the plate and laced a single scoring the final run of the
inning.  That early run support was enough for Arrigo(11-9) and Cincinnati.
Cincinnati finished with 12 hits in the victory.  
 
Bill Singer(12-14) was given the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and
2 walks in 6 innings.  With this win, Cincinnati has a league leading 81-57
record.  They have been 5-5 lately.  With the loss Los Angeles now has a
record of 72-69.
 
LOS ANGELES AT CINCINNATI

Tom Haller had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Crosley Field as the Los Angeles Dodgers
beat the Cincinnati Reds by the count of 9 to 8.
 
Jim Brewer(5-2) was solid in relief, and he got credit for the win.  He was
stingy on the mound, allowing just 1 hit and no walks in 1 inning.
Cincinnati had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.  
 
Brewer got relief help from Mudcat Grant who gained credit for his 2nd save.
Ted Abernathy(4-3) suffered the loss in relief.  
 
 
NEW YORK AT PITTSBURGH

Jim McAndrew tossed a fine 4 hitter as the New York Mets outscored the
Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings 2 to 1.
 
The score was tied at 1 after nine.  New York won it in the 10th inning.
After two were out Ed Charles ripped a solo home run.  The Pittsburgh batters
didn't put up a fight in the bottom of the 10th.  
 
The win was credited to McAndrew(6-1) who went the whole way allowing 1 run.
Steve Blass(10-10) was hit with the loss.  'McAndrew pitched a gem of a
game', Larry Shepard recounted.  'He kept our batters off balance the entire
game.'
  
 
SAN FRANCISCO AT ST. LOUIS

Bob Gibson held San Francisco to 3 hits as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated
the San Francisco Giants by the score of 5 to 2 at Busch Stadium.
 
St. Louis tallied 4 runs in the 6th inning when they had 4 base hits.  The
critical plate appearance was by Roger Maris who brought the crowd to their
feet when he laced a base-knock bringing home two baserunners.  St. Louis
totaled 9 hits on the night.  
 
Gibson(20-8) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Bobby
Bolin(5-7) took the loss.  He pitched 8 innings giving up 9 hits and 3 walks.

In a two run game the San Francisco Giants got by the St. Louis Cardinals by
the score of 4 to 2.
 
San Francisco jumped on top to stay in the top of the 2nd inning when they
came up with 2 runs on 2 hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Jack Hiatt
who helped quiet the crowd when he singled bringing in two baserunners.  St.
Louis out-hit San Francisco 8 to 5, but San Francisco ended up with more
runs.  
 
Juan Marichal(19-13) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 8 and 1/3
innings. Marichal got help from Frank Linzy who earned his 9th save.  Steve
Carlton(14-11) suffered the loss.  He gave up only 3 hits and 1 walk in 8
innings.
