Luis Tiant(16-12) was on top of his game in New York as he tossed a beauty of
a no-hitter against the New York Yankees. The blistering-hot Cleveland
Indians won by a score of 3 to 0.

Tiant had overwhelming stuff this afternoon. He simply never gave the New
York batters a decent pitch to drive. He had excellent control, walking only
one. The Cleveland players and coaches started to leave Tiant alone with his
thoughts after the game reached the 7th inning. By the time the 9th inning
rolled around, you could hear a pin drop every time he went to his wind-up -
and an explosion after every out. Tiant chalked up 10 strikeouts. Cleveland
rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon.

Stan Bahnsen(20-11) was the loser. He gave up 2 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings.
When asked how his stuff was out there, Tiant looked a bit incredulous (as
did this reporter) and replied 'A bit better than average, I'd have to say'
